“We live in a fractured world. I’ve always seen it as my role as an artist to make wholeness.”

STATEMENT

Stemming from the world of abstraction, my works unfold through a slow and meditative process of rhythmic and repetitive markings on watercolor paper. I use gouaches, pencils and inks on the surface. Through continuous movements, I slowly build my imagery informed by the natural quality of the paper. I choose my color palette in earth and skin tones as a metaphor for a collective experience of humanity.

I am drawn to a visual exploration of the laws of nature, the spiritual and the supernatural. Through a meditative process of drawing, my works expand on the possibilities and the intersections between geometric space and line. In my vision, I strive to reconcile fundamental opposites found in the physical world. Inspired by Eastern philosophies, I am continuously exploring unity and duality on paper as a metaphor for the human struggle to find a place of balance.

BIO

Drawing from the practice of psychic automatism, Virginia Shepley’s abstract forms and representational motifs reconcile the dualities of life. An abstract painter using line drawing and biomorphic forms as a visual representation of fundamental spiritual ideas, her work explores the connections and borderlines between physical reality and the invisible. Referencing elements of the body and nature, her color palette resonates as mystical vibrational imagery.

In 2001, Virginia received her Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting from John F. Kennedy University’s Arts and Consciousness program in Berkeley, California.

Her work has been shown in solo shows in galleries in California and North Carolina. Her drawings and paintings feature in private collections all over the world.

Virginia lives and works on a farm in North Carolina.
